Reds snap Brewers’ winning streak in extras

Austin Hays singled in TJ Friedl in the bottom of the 10th inning as the host Cincinnati Reds snapped the Milwaukee Brewers’ franchise-record 14-game win streak with a 3-2 win Sunday.
Spencer Steer bunted Friedl over to third to start the 10th. Milwaukee intentionally walked Elly De La Cruz and Will Benson before Hays drove the game-winner down the left-field line.
William Contreras hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning off Reds closer Emilio Pagan to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead.
The Reds, who remain the only team in the major leagues not to be swept this season, scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
The Brewers committed a rare error to start the ninth when Joey Ortiz bobbled pinch-hitter Will Benson’s grounder to short.
Noevi Marte singled Benson to right with one out and Jose Trevino drove him in with a single to right to tie the game and send the teams into extra innings for the second straight game.
Graham Ashcraft (7-4) pitched a scoreless 10th for the win.
Grant Anderson (2-4) blew the save in the ninth and then took the loss in the 10th.
Cincinnati starter Andrew Abbott has not won since beating the Miami Marlins July 9, despite having the second lowest ERA (2.41) in the National League heading into Sunday.
The 26-year-old All-Star dazzled for seven innings against Milwaukee, allowing four hits, no runs, no walks and striking out seven on 92 pitches.
Milwaukee starter Jose Quintana went 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and one run. The southpaw struck out four and didn’t give up a walk on 98 pitches.
Quintana and Abbott traded scoreless innings through six before the Reds finally broke through in the seventh.
Hays led off with a double into the left-field corner. Marte singled to right, but Hays held up at third to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Trevino then sent a long fly ball to right that Milwaukee’s Brandon Lockridge caught high against the wall.
Hays scored easily for a one-run lead.
